Camp New Horizons
Camp New Horizons
Purpose:
Camp New Horizons is designed to provide children and adolescents who are experiencing social, emotional or behavioral problems with a supportive environment in which they can experience nature, learn and practice positive skills, and develop healthy inter-personal relationships.
Services:
Camp New Horizons offers three eight-day residential camping sessions and a holiday reunion. Specific activities include camp crafts, nature skills, outdoor recreation, skill-building, and guidance in problem solving, anger management and conflict resolution techniques.
Eligibility and Referrals:
Camp New Horizons serves Cattaraugus County boys and girls, aged 8 – 15. Mental health professionals in the schools, County agencies and private practice refer the children to camp. These children are referred to us because of specific emotional and/or behavioral problems such as ADD/ADHD, anger management difficulties; perhaps suffering depression or diagnosed with bi-polar problems; some have suffered sexual and/or physical abuse; there may be multiple needs within the home environment. Each child has his/her specific needs.
After receiving a referral, the parent/guardian is sent an application, and together, these two forms determine eligibility and give our staff very specific goals to keep in mind for each camper. Our day is organized as any other camp — fun, activities, swimming, boating, and nature events. However, daily evaluations are done for each child with focus on that child’s specific goals. Each camper truly receives individual attention within a very structured day.
Fee: None
