The COMPEER Story

WHERE DID THE PROGRAM ORIGINATE?

The Compeer Program originated in Rochester, New York, in 1973 and has been known as Compeer since 1977. There have been over 25,000 relationships during this time, referrals coming from hundreds of therapists, agencies, and private practices. Compeer was chosen as a model program by the National Institute of Mental Health in 1982 and 1983 and received a grant to encourage the development of similar programs throughout the nation. Additional funding through the PEW Foundation, ACTION, and corporate grants have enabled Compeer to continue its program dissemination effort. Currently, there are over 100 programs in the Compeer Network in the United States, Australia, and Canada. For more information about Compeer International locations near you click here.
